Truro and Penwith College is a large tertiary college with two main campuses located in Truro and Penzance plus some smaller sites. The College also provides full IT services and connectivity to a partner (Callywith) College located in Bodmin. The network supports approximately 12,000 staff and students, 3,000 wired desktops 1,200 laptops and 300 wireless AP’s which frequently see over 5,000 connected devices. The Penwith Campus typically has 20% of the overall student, staff and desktop count with most of the activity taking place on the larger Truro Campus. The College network has grown over the years and has been continually added to with the result that edge switches date anywhere between 2006 and 2020. These are primarily a mixture of Procurve and ComWare based HP devices with some Dell N series added between 2017 and 2020. In 2017, the previous HP 5400 cores were replaced with Dell S4000 series devices and the network has performed poorly ever since. The decision has now been taken to replace the entire network from Core to Edge with a consistent range of devices from a single vendor.
